Lt. Col. Grossman Presentation Review
Written by Shannon Bunger

The third day of the conference brought us one of the premiere speakers for Law Enforcement, Lt. Colonel Dave Grossman.  It was not easy for Lt. Colonel Grossman to reach Reno, Nevada, for the conference due to weather, flight delays, and other obstacles.  He was finally able to reach Reno late Tuesday evening, which required some schedule shifting as he was originally scheduled to speak on Tuesday during the day.  Nevertheless, his presentation ended up taking place during the activities on Wednesday.

Lt. Colonel Grossman has written several books including On Killing and On Combat, both which are required reading by the commandant’s of the U.S. Marine Corp.  He is an inspirational speaker and motivator for Law Enforcement, Military, and Educators.  Lt. Colonel Grossman is passionate about his work and how he delivers his message.  He is on the staff at West Point as a psychology professor and heads the Warrior Science Group.

Lt. Colonel Grossman spoke on Wednesday June 10, on “The Bulletproof Mind:  Mental Preparation for Combat”.  If you have never heard the Colonel speak, his message incorporates the idea of either being a sheep or a sheep dog.  You can be sheep and live in a world of, “it will never happen to me or here”.  Or you can be the sheep dog, and live in the world of, “it can happen to me and it will happen to me sometime and when it does, I will be ready to handle anything”.

Finally, he spoke of several incident s that have occurred in schools not only in the U.S. but from around the world.  He gave several instances of where if just one security guard would have been armed several lives would have been saved.  Lt. Colonel Grossman stated that you would never take out the fire exit signs or sprinklers, so why are we so against having armed personnel in our schools.

At the end of the day we were all wore out by just watching him deliver his message and trying to take all of his information in.  Lt. Colonel Dave Grossman delivers a poignant message beautifully.  He focuses on real world application, and draws you in further to his message with each uttered word.  Listening to, and being a part of Lt. Colonel Grossman’s message is a worthwhile experience whether if participating for the first time or the hundredth.
